Profile
Angel Givaja joined the Brussels office of Garrigues in 2002. He was named partner in 2015.
Angel advises clients in the areas of competition law, international trade law, and EU regulatory law. He regularly counsels companies and business associations from a wide range of sectors including in pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, aeronautics, banking, agriculture and paper industries, among others.
His work has been recognized by the international legal directories Chambers & Partners and Legal 500. In its 2018 issue, Chambers Europe highlights how "clients value his solid legal knowledge in the commercial field as well as his 'effectiveness and efficiency in achieving goals set by customers'". Chambers Global 2017 praises him as "a very good lawyer with a great knowledge of matters and who is always deeply involved in giving the best service to the clients".
Angel has a wealth of litigation experience before the Court of Justice of the EU, having acting in the following cases: T-496/07 Repsol (attribution of liability for competition law infringement), T-227/10 BSCH Banco Santander (State aid), T-33/05 Cetarsa (cartels and leniency policy), C-617/13 P Rylesa (cartels), C-181/11 P Compañía Española de Tabaco en Rama (cartels), T-574/14 EAEPC (parallel trade in medicines), C-501/06 GlaxoSmithKline (on the interpretation of Article 101(3) TFEU), T-247/04 ASEPROFAR (infringement proceedings against Member States), C-448/07 Ayuntamiento de Madrid (budgetary policy), T-219/10 Autogrill (State aid), C-3/18 P and T-712/14, CEAHR (selective distribution of luxury watches), C-319/18 Fred Olsen and Commission (State aid and access to public infrastructure).
In the field of the trade defense measures, Angel has represented several companies in the framework of investigations initiated by the EU, the US, China and Morocco regarding steel, canned mandarins, black olives, wine, coke 80+, foundry products, fastening elements and potassium permanganate. He has extensive experience in antidumping, anti-subsidy and safeguards proceedings. Additionally, he regularly counsels clients on EU imposed sanctions against third countries such as Russia and Iran.
Among other academic activities, Angel is a professor at the China-Europe School of Law, having led seminars on EU competition law in Beijing and Shanghai. Moreover, he has lectured on EU law on various postgraduate courses organized by Hamburg University, Erasmus University Rotterdam, San Pablo CEU in Madrid and the Instituto de Estudios Bursátiles (Course of Competition Law in the EU and in Spain).
Angel is a Member of the Madrid and Brussels Bar Associations.
