Michael A. Dorfman is a registered patent attorney and a member in Dykema's Intellectual Property and Intellectual Property Litigation practice areas. Mr. Dorfman represents technology companies as both plaintiffs and defendants in intellectual property and other litigation, including litigation relating to patent infringement, trade secret misappropriation, unfair competition and contract disputes. He handles all aspects of litigation-from pre-filing investigation and counseling through trial or settlement-and routinely litigates significant actions in federal courts across the country, including major federal dockets such as the Eastern District of Texas, the District of Delaware, the Northern District of California and the Northern District of Illinois. He also handles inbound and outbound licenses as well as transactions involving the purchase or sale of patent portfolios. In addition, he participated in some of the earliest inter partes review proceedings at the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Mr. Dorfman also prepares legal opinions regarding patent infringement and validity, and regularly counsels clients with respect to allegations of infringement. He has substantial familiarity with issues that arise in connection with software and other technology-related licenses, and regularly assists clients in resolving related disputes.

With a background in electrical engineering, Mr. Dorfman is well versed in the electrical, computer and mechanical fields, and handles litigation and licensing matters involving diverse technical areas, including liquid crystal displays, imaging devices, battery chargers, security systems, computer hardware and software, Power over Ethernet devices, mobile fitness applications, high-speed cooking devices, coronary stents, microprocessor-controlled vehicle engine analyzers, programmable logic controllers, and video processing and synchronization circuitry.
