José Miguel studied law at the School of Jurisprudence at Colegio Mayor del Rosario and has a Master of Laws (LL.M) from Harvard University. He participated in the "Politics of Global Finance" program at London School of Economics and attended the course on the European Economic Union at Instituto Ortega y Gasset, in Madrid.

He has a Diploma in Insurance Law from Universidad Javeriana de Colombia and has worked as university lecturer on Colombian constitutional law and economics in international politics at Universidad Externado de Colombia; and as senior lecturer on financial and commercial contracts at the School of Law at Universidad de Los Andes.

He worked at Banco Nacional del Comercio where he held the position of Legal Deputy President and General Secretary; and later became International Broker and Executive Director at Willis Limited Reinsurance Broker, in the property practice of the London office (United Kingdom).

In 2000 he founded law firm De La Calle, Londoño & Posada with other colleagues, where he has worked since then in the free competition law, consumer protection, data protection, litigation and public law practice areas.

Between 2010 and 2012 he was Superintendent of Industry and Commerce, the most senior position at the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce, a national agency tasked with acting as Single Competition Authority for Colombia, Consumer Protection Authority, National Industrial Property Office and National Data Protection Authority.

In 2012 he returned to the legal profession and in 2014 joined Garrigues as managing partner of the litigation and public law departments at the Bogotá Office.
