Profile
Jose is a partner in ALTA Guatemala has extensive experience in finance, tax planning and compliance issues. He has advised foreign financial institutions on structured financial operations, sovereign bond offerings in international capital markets.
He has also advised foreign financial institutions on cross-border transactions and their tax implications, mergers and acquisitions and complex project financing agreements involving local and international banks and financial institutions and/or borrowers. He is often engaged on business and corporate strategy matters and as an advisor to the boards of directors of financial institutions and is frequently appointed as an arbitrator in these matters.
He has acted as a director of insurance and surety companies, and has been retained by insurance companies and reinsurance syndicates to advise on complex claims and reinsurance disputes involving agreements or transactions governed by Guatemalan or foreign laws.
He is an appointed arbitrator for the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). He is a member of the ISO Technical Committee on Governance (compliance and anti-bribery) and has also served as director of several financial and industrial institutions such as the Center for Social and Corporate Responsibility (CSR), and actively participates, pro bono, in organizations that work for transparency and advancement of the Guatemalan justice system.
He also actively advised corporations on the implementation of effective compliance and governance programs, and leads a team of compliance experts who provide consulting and training to corporations and their officers. Jos has also worked as a professor of finance and commercial contracts.
