Profile
Charles is a partner in the Energy and Infrastructure team at Hunton with over 35 years of experience in energy, projects, and project finance. A recognised leader in his field, he advises banks, governments, companies, and international traders across the energy sector, with a particular focus on power, oil, and gas. Charles has been at the forefront of a number of major international energy related transactions, including significant energy sector mergers and acquisitions, and financings.
Charles has a wealth of international experience, especially in Africa, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean region. In recent years, he has led the advisory team assisting an EU government on its LNG import terminal/gas to power project, and has been advising the Libyan National Oil Corporation on a variety of matters including its Gas Strategy and the new-form PSCs. Charles was also engaged by the Thailand NOC, on the complex Unitisation arrangements for the Thai gas fields. His M&A experience includes advising a major Chinese SOE on the acquisition of a super-major's interests in South Africa/Botswana.
Charles is a member of the bar in Tanzania, where for over a decade he advised lenders on the restructuring of a complex power project financing.
For five years before joining Hunton, Charles led the finance and projects practice at a prominent global firm as the International Group Head. In 2018, he was appointed a Recorder of the Crown Court, in 2019, a Deputy High Court Judge, sitting in London (for the usual six-year term), and in 2024, a Chair of the United Kingdom, Competition Appeal Tribunal.
