Profile

Katie Sykes is counsel with the Research & Opinions Group. Her practice focuses on a wide range of areas, including corporate law, real estate law, administrative law and property taxation law. As a research lawyer, she assists clients with creative solutions to complex legal problems.

In addition to her work with Lawson Lundell, Katie is Professor of Law at Thompson Rivers University Faculty of Law, where she teaches courses including Tort Law and Corporate Governance. She researches and writes on innovation in law, the future of the legal profession, and animal law.

From 2004 to 2010, Katie practiced in New York at Cleary Gottlieb, where her practice focused on executive compensation and public company corporate governance. From 2003 to 2004, she was clerk to Justice Louis LeBel of the Supreme Court of Canada.

* Drafted or assisted with drafting statements of claim, statements of defence and other pleadings.
* Drafted or assisted with drafting briefs, factums and other written arguments for all levels of court, arbitration or administration tribunals, including assisting with drafting successful application for leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada and the appeal factum at the Supreme Court in TransAlta Generation Partnership v. Alberta.
* Performed statutory interpretation opinions regarding legislation across jurisdictions to compare rights, remedies and risks for particular clients or industries; to address key provisions; or to provide guidance regarding the intersection of statutory provisions that may not have been considered before.
* Performed contractual interpretation opinions across a wide variety of documents such as contracts of purchase and sale, shareholders agreements, and limited partnership agreements; or regarding specific clauses such as best efforts, limitation of liability, arbitration, and guarantees.
