Profile
Riley Key has been a dedicated regulatory compliance attorney since 2011, serving a diverse range of financial institutions, including national and community banks. As a member of the firm’s Banking and Financial Services Practice Group, his practice focuses on navigating federal and state regulatory frameworks related to consumer lending, servicing, and debt collection for products such as mortgages, credit cards, and auto loans.
Riley has a unique perspective on the challenges facing in-house professionals having spent considerable time embedded in the compliance and legal departments at two national banks:
- Served as the interim chief compliance officer for almost six months
- Spent almost a year seconded in the legal department advising on late-stage collection efforts
Riley frequently advises clients on complex regulatory compliance matters. Collaborating closely with business, legal, and compliance leaders, he identifies potential compliance risks and delivers practical solutions tailored to meet regulatory expectations and industry best practices. Relying on his experience as a compliance attorney, he has conducted multiple holistic risk assessments and reviews of financial institutions' compliance management systems.
Riley also devotes a significant portion of his practice to preparing clients for federal and state-specific regulatory examinations and responding to findings. From conducting pre-exam risk assessments to managing examiner interactions, Riley provides comprehensive support throughout the examination process. He counsels clients on self-disclosing compliance issues, challenging examination findings, responding to supervisory letters, and negotiating settlements when necessary.
Riley is also active in the digital asset industry, advising on regulatory considerations surrounding cryptocurrencies and NFTs. His forward-looking approach ensures clients are well-positioned in the evolving landscape of digital finance.
